The Joys of Biking

Apply to volunteer with MPS Safe Routes to Schools bike education!

Minneapolis Public Schools Safe Routes to School is working toward a goal of every 4th and 5th grader learning how to ride a bicycle safely on the streets and trails of Minneapolis. Using the statewide walk and bike safety curriculum, Walk!Bike!Fun!, students are taught how to safely ride a bike classes during fall and spring terms.

In the 2021-2022 school year, this school day program reached 25 MPS elementary schools. More than 2,300 4th and 5th graders collectively traveled over 10,000 miles on the streets and trails of Minneapolis. 300 of these students learned how to ride a bike for the very first time!

In order for this program to exist, we need volunteers. Along with our incredible teachers, volunteers are the backbone of this program! Bike units require much more preparation and planning than other units and volunteer help is crucial to their success.

Volunteering for the universal bike education program involves assisting teachers with instructing the bike unit. Generally, volunteers help the teacher in whatever way is most useful for that day's class. Training will be provided for all volunteers, no prior education or experience required. Volunteering for universal bike education is a very fun way to engage in your local school community and support active living for all students in MPS!

Apply now to volunteer with MPS Safe Routes to School universal bike education program by filling out this Google Form. You will help students experience the beauty of Minneapolis, the adventure of bicycling, and the joy found in this life-long healthy, affordable, and sustainable activity.

Thank you for helping to bring this amazing and life changing opportunity to MPS students.
