Safe Routes to School Friends,

It’s crazy how cool you all are! One example: The Get Fit With History class during summer school at Broadway High School at Longfellow. Students studied historic places and then BIKED to them (Milwaukee Avenue, the Stone Arch Bridge,  St. Anthony Fall, the Swedish Institute, Fort Snelling…) so students could EXPERIENCE history. Students also discovered the incredible bike trails we have in Minneapolis (a bit of living history) and strengthened their connections to the city as a whole. Kudos Broadway staff and students!

Kudos to all the parents, staff, students, and community members walking and biking to school, setting up bike clubs,  and organizing school wide efforts such as the Bus Stop & Walk. Your energy is inspiring.

Hope your school year is off to a great start. Tons of resources below. I hope everyone will sign up for Walk Bike Day. Now may also be a good time to examine bicycle parking, review arrival and dismissal procedures, and share pedestrian or bicycle safety tips sheets.

As always, let us know what is happening in your school community. Whatever your walk-bike dreams, MPS SRTS is here to assist.

Register Now | MPS Walk and Bike to School Day | October 7  | Flyers, stickers, fruit bowl, and more!

October 7 is International Walk to School Day. Minneapolis Public Schools will join families around the world to celebrate the joys and reap the benefits of walking and biking to school. (And If Oct 7 doesn’t work for your school’s walk/bike day, you can choose a day that does.) Events can be as simple as announcing “It’s walk and bike to school day,” and providing I WALKED and I BIKED stickers to walkers and bikers as they arrive. If you register your walk/bike event with MPS SRTS, we’ll send you these stickers and everything you need for a successful event, and Health Partners/My Personal Solution will send a bowl of bananas to the staff lounge. In the fall more than 30 schools, representing more than 6,500 students and staff participated in this event. Don’t let your school be left out.
