May 4 is National Bike to School Day and Minneapolis Public Schools will celebrate with bike and walk to school events across the district. Schools will celebrate on May 4 or on any day or week that works for the school community.
Thank you for registering for Bike and Walk to School and Work Day (or Week), part of MPS Wellness Week and a preview event of Minneapolis Bike Week.
Is my school signed up? Check here. If your school hasn't registered yet, please USE THIS LINK or contact firstname.lastname@example.org to do so. If you haven't done so already, MPS SRTS will also register your event with the National Organizers of Bike to School Day.
Plan & Promote
Events can be as simple as announcing “It’s Bike and Walk to School Day” and giving "I BIKED" and “I WALKED” stickers to students, families and staff when they arrive. This year your prize package includes a banner for bikers and walker to sign when they arrive! Coffee for parents outside and perhaps a little music takes the event a little further. Organizing meet up point and biking or walking together is even more elaborate (and more fun too). You can also invite special guest bikers or walkers. Here are 51 event ideas to inspire you.
Whatever you decide—be sure to promote your event. Hall posters, PA announcements, newsletters, robo-calls, and fliers are all ways to promote your event. Student groups and parent groups can also be helpful for promotion.
NEW THIS YEAR: Let's Roll MPS, a group bicycle ride on Wednesday, May 4, starting at the Davis Service Center and ending at the Nutrition Center gardens, (see flyer). JOIN US! JOIN US! JOIN US! You don't want to miss this inagural event.
Get your bikes ready to ride: FREE YOUTH BIKE FIX IT DAY, Farview Park, 621 29th Avenue N, 9 a.m.-noon
These flyers are ready to go for May 4 events. You can easily change the date or add or subtract event details too.

Some students really, really want to walk or bike to school but cannot. Some schools take a school-wide walks during the day to get everyone involved. Recess walking or the Bus Stop & Walk also allows more children to participate. Another suggestion: students could write about biking or walking or commit to walking or biking somewhere outside of school to be included in a drawing. Here are suggestions for including children with disabilities in the event.
